Throughout history and all over the world people have gathered in community to sing. We sing to celebrate. We sing to mourn. We sing to process or grief and our rage. We sing in community to help us feel, viscerally, that we are not alone.
Science reveals the healing properties of singing. Singing acts as a powerful healing tool by reducing stress hormones, releasing neurotransmitters like endorphins and oxytocin, and stimulating the vagus nerve to promote relaxation. Singing—particularly in a setting oriented toward expression rather than performance—improves mental health, lowers blood pressure, strengthens the immune system, and increases pain thresholds, while the deep breathing singing stimulates improves lung capacity and oxygenation.
